Reason to Rock is a book about rock music that is being initially published via the World Wide Web. In fact, it has been published on the Web as it was being written, thus giving early readers a chance to provide feedback and shape the final text of the work.

The goal of this book is to seriously evaluate rock music as an art form. It does so by first looking at the essential elements of rock — the practices and perspectives that make it a distinct artistic endeavor — and then by looking at these elements in action, through a detailed discussion of sixteen great examples of the form. The overall intent is to establish a foundation for the aesthetics of rock.

The author, Herb Bowie, has a degree in English from the University of Michigan, reviewed rock music for the school's newspaper, The Michigan Daily, and has written a previous book, titled Why Die? A Beginner's Guide to Living Forever."
